Vesuvius Day

Vesuvius Day is observed on August 24th to commemorate the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD that destroyed the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae. The day is an opportunity to remember the thousands of lives lost in the disaster and to raise awareness of the ongoing risk posed by active volcanoes.
